Just a big note of thanks for all the help I've recieved here. I brewed my first all grain batch yesterday - and boy was it fantastic! I used the recipe "Good Life Pale Ale" from "The Joy of Homebrewing". It all seemed to go over without a hitch, and I was even drinking plenty of brew.

I don't know if others feel this way, but the smell was mouth-droolingly swell compared to the extract. My wife ussually turned up her nose at it, but this time she sat out in the garage and helped because, "It actually smells pretty good!"

Whoever thought of this forum, thumbs up to you. And all you wise brewers - thanks a million. Bottoms up to you

Glad it went well!
I know when I did my first one I was pretty intimidated--and when it was done realized how easy it is! I still screwed up my mash temps a little and had to adjust withhot water, but it went well enough to make me do more!!!

The smells of brewing are what I LOVE about this hobby. I love it when the grain is sitting in the bag from the HBS and it fills the area with wonderful aroma. I love toasting grains cause it smells like a bakery in the house. I love the smell of the sweet mash. And I love the smell coming from the airlock!!!! I'm addicted. :p

And isn't it hypnotizing to watch it bubble. You just want to show it off to everyone saying, "See, look whad I did!" Then my wife gives me this look, and says "Great..."

Yeah... I find myself uncontrollably drawn to the fermenters, just to look at the krauesen and bubbling airlock.

I can be found with my head over the carboys, sniffing, once before work, once after work, and once before bed. Minimal.
