I need help!

After bottling the beer there is a thin layer of yeast at the bottom of the bottles; What is the appropriate way to get rid of this..? everything seems to be so easily contaminated..

That thin layer of yeast is a good sign.
To get rid of it, simply cool the bottle down in the fridge, and then open it up, and slowly pour the beer into a glass, leaving about a tablespoon of beer in the bottle, with the yeast sludge. Drink the beer, and rinse the bottle out!!

The sludge is just yeast that has dropped out of suspension, presumably after finishing all the sugar in the beer, carbonating it etc. The yeast has the additional advantage of being an oxygen scavenger, which is to say your beer will stay fresh tasting for a good long while because of it.

DON'T DRINK IT!!! That "Yeast Layer" or "Scum of DEATH" is extremely poisonous! Not only that, it is against federal regulations to dispose of it except under the most stringent of conditions. It is extremely expensive for an individual to dispose of this substance legally. If you send me all of your bottles, I will be happy to dispose of them along with a case of mine that the same thing happened to. It is highly recommended that you ship them refrigerated for... um... stability purposes. Did I mention it's also explosive?!?
