I've been anticipating my first all grain for along time, and hopefully tomorrow is the day. I do have a big question before I start.

I purchased two 10 gal. rubbermaid round watercoolers, a false bottom, a sparge arm, and all the spigot hardware. My question is this: Where do I do the 60 minute single stage infusion mash? Do I do it in the cooler with the Phil's false bottom, or do I just use that one to sparge it in? Or should I do the mash in the empty cooler, then pour the whole thing in the cooler with the false bottom when I'm ready to sparge? I hope I'm getting all my lingo right.

I'm a bit worried that if I do the mash in the cooler with the false bottom it will clog it up. But if I do it in the other, I will get to much air in the mash when I'm dumping it into the other.

???

The cooler with the false bottom is your mashtun.
The other cooler (HLT) will only have water in it when it is time to sparge. The sparge arm will go from a hose connected to the HLT and sits on top of the mash tun.

I don't understand what you mean by getting too much air into it....

Do some homework with this link. It'll explain everything step by step and it has tons of pictures so its impossible to screw up. I used it for my first AG batch. :)

He batch sparges instead of fly sparges like you will be doing, but its pretty much the same concept. Fill up the HLT with sparge water and the arm sits on top of the mash tun and sparges for you.

Thank you ORRELSE,

That answered my question. I feel as if I'm jumping off the high dive for the first time and I'm going to belly flop to my death. I should relax and just have some fun with it.

Thanks again.
