Default What is the best way to make soda with Cub Scouts?

I have been brewing for a few years now and have tried my hand at cider and mead but have never made a soda. I am the den leader for my sons Cub Scout den and am planning out the upcoming year. I think it would be fun to make soda with the boys but am not sure the best way to do it. If we made a big batch and bottled it with yeast for the carbonation the boys could take it home but its going to produce alcohol. I know it will be a minor amount of alcohol but even a minor amount isn't going to be okay with the Boy Scouts of America. What are my options? Should I have them make their own syrup and just get a big seltzer bottle to add the fizz? I have 30 boys in my den so that doesn't seem practical. i might be able to get my hands on some more kegs and a regulator so I suppose I could do it in bulk that way, carb it up and then bottle it for the kids to take home and chill. Any other suggestions?

Maybe you could have a half dozen syrups and a tarting agent like lemon juice. They experiment combining simple combos, like chocolate and raspberry or strawberry/banana/lemon... with seltzer water then added for immediate tasting They put their final creation into a take home bottle.

What we would do at big brew day and other events at the store is have a keg filled with water and simple syrup carbed up to about 40 PSI and colder then the north pole. Then the kids could play with the soda flavorings in their cup with ice and use a picnic tap to dispense the soda water and sugar. Seemed to work great for us.

Cheers
Jay

Thanks for those suggestions! I think taking a sixtel of cold and pre-craned soda water would be the way to go and then let them experiment. Of course I need to do some experimentation first but this should be fun!

Hmmmm...making soda with Cub Scouts. Not sure I'd want to...they are kinda small. Maybe use Boy Scouts...they are usually bigger. Chop them up into quite small pieces and then mash them at about 154°F for an hour...oh. Wait...I think I understand now!

God bless you. After spending that much time with a whole group of cub scouts, I'd need more than soda.

Oh, believe me, I tap a beer before I say hello to my wife after most meetings

Do both. Use yeast and sugar in a bottle with a balloon, and a capped bottle doing the same. (possibly with the amount of sugar only needed to make unsweetened carbonated water. Yell Science! A whole bunch. Edit: ask where they think the air in the balloon went, then open the capped bottle.

Then, show how co2 also is tanked and carbonates water, throw some things in about temperature. Even how natural springs and natural carbonation work. Perhaps some things about minerals in water.

Then bring out the syrups for taste analysis.

That's a good idea, I could make that work, probably span more than one meeting. Thanks!
