When do you know if your bottle of rootbeer is ready?

put rootbeer in one 20 oz test plastic bottle. Wait till the test bottle is very hard. Put all bottles in fridge until you drink.

I tried it, it worked but doesn't smell good, smells like dirty socks.
Do you think I waited to long to before I put it it the frig. I put it in after 2 days,,
