Just tasted a finished product from the Mr. root Beer kit I got and no one in the house liked it one bit. Tasted sour and very strong!
I followed the instructions to a tee and wonder what happened?
Could it just be the extract isn't to our liking?

"Sour" and "strong" could indicate bacterial infection.
Also, I've found that taste can vary quite a bit across different brands of root beer extract. May just be one you don't like. My last batch of RB used Gnome brand -- pretty tasty.

Is extract the same as syrup? Im guessing maybe it's syrup minus the sugar? If I were to use syrup instead what would the process be?
I have used the Mr. Root Beer kit before and it wasn't sour at all. It was so good that my boss at the time, a known root beer hater, said it was really good. I think he is right about contamination.
