I planted my hops last year on the side of my deck by the railing post. Will they climb that or do I need to use twine?

I'd say string some twine down there. Cheap, and once the bines catch hold of it you won't need to do much more at all.

They'll grow on their own to the top rail but to get them to grow across, I have to tie them to the rail. I try to run them under and over as much as I can.
