Default which way do the roots grow?

I am going to plant my hops parallel to my fence so should I plant the rizhomes parallel to the fence or perpendicular? I dont know if my neighbor will apreciate it if the roots start invading his yard in a year or two.

Hop roots grow down very deep AND can spread several feet in every direction. You can just about count on your hops popping up in your neighbors yard if it's anywhere near the property line.

Only by using some kind of border-barrier, will you keep the hops out of his yard. My Cascades was four feet in diameter the third year.

Yea, I pulled one runner off my nuggets last fall that was about 5 feet long (1st year BTW) while dressing the crowns. You can keep things to a minimum by reading up on hop gardening. I dress my crowns in the fall and keep tabs on them during the summer.
