I heard that it's best to plant hops in March, but would it make any sense to plan them now (mid-august)? I figure even if I don't get much this year, maybe it will have a more established root system for next year compared to planting fresh in the spring.
Well, it might be too late in the sense that I can't find any Rhizomes in stock anywhere. LHBS, Midwest, and HopsDirect are all sold out of Cascade. Lame.
You can really only find rhizomes in the spring. But if you can remember me I may have some old established Cascade crown for sale in February or March next year.
In the spring, when the ground is workable and the plant hasn't began to grow. That is the easiest time to dig up rhizomes and sell them. Growers don't want to mess with the plants as they grow. End of season the are drying and then selling hops. So really the only convenient time to sell rhizomes is in the spring. Material to consider.
If you can find a home brewing neighbor that's growing hops, you could see if he/she would give you some side arms that you could root and get an 8-9 month jump vs waiting for 2012 rhizomes to be delivered....
High hops out of Colorado sells hop plants thru at least September. I bought a couple. They are doing.g alright but Im not too certain there a good value. Basically I think they use a 3/4 inch rhizome cutting to grow a plant. You can get it in the ground this year but may be no better off than getting a 5-6 inch rhizome from say freshops in next Spring.
Is it too late to grow hops in Texas?
