Rhizomes in SE Michigan
|
|
It is about that time to start ordering Rhizomes from what I hear/see. I am in SE Michigan and want to start out with some Cascades and Hallertau as those fit my styles best. Does anyone in the area grow any of these varieties?
On a side note, does anyone know of a local supplier of these? From what I have read, it is better to buy these locally to increase the first year harvest?
Sorry for all the questions but I am new at this and appreciate any help. Thanks!

All lot of folks in S.E. Michigan order them through Cap N Cork. They only do it for a limited time, and usually announce when to place you orders. Talk to Andy there and find out when. You can email over there at info@capncorkhomebrew.com

Freshops and others sell rhizomes online in Feb.
If you get them fomr another homebrewer, or form a Mich hops farmer you might have a chance at a mature crown, or a LARGE rhizome, which would maybe get you a head start on the first year, but nonetheless you will be starting without a root system, so the first year is not going to produce much, especially the Hallertau variety.
However, any head start will still be a benefit and you might see a much better 2nd year with a good sized rhizome or crown.

That is a good point, does anyone have rhizomes around the Royal Oak area that I could purchase or trade for some beer?

I heard great leaks hops is the best, you can get a 6 pack of crowns for about 50 bucks. Crowns for what I am reading are actually the plant not a root cutting. Also seems the ones they are selling are already matured for 1 year so the first year should be pretty productive. http://www.ebay.com/sch/ausman123/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
I am not affiliated with them, but i suggested them since he was so helpful in answering my questions. I have already pre-ordered some crowns

I second Great Lake Hops. I was over to their place a week ago, to check out their operation. Great people to deal with and very nice plants. i ended up getting 15 crowns to start growing trials with this spring.

I think I am going to order some crowns from them, just curious as to what you are doing with these crowns until springtime?
