I'm getting ready to plant my rhizomes and seem to be stuck. This may be a dumb question, but I have searched and didn't really find a definitive answer. When planting the rhizome do you lay it down horizontally or vertically? I saw a video where the guy laid it horizontal, but that seemed odd to me.
What I've read and heard, it should be planted horizontally. The bines will grow up and the roots down. It's a rhizome which sends shoots out laterally under the ground.

Locate the buds and see which direction the strongest ones point. The roots and buds will orient themselves appropriately regardless of how you plant them, but each tiny little rhizome only has so much stored energy, so you want to plant them in the orientation that allows the buds to emerge as quickly and with as little expended energy as possible and to start extracting energy from the sun ASAP. I like to plant mine on about a 30 or 45 degree angle with the buds pointing up.
If you plant it horizontally, the buds can reach the surface rapidly from either end.

Remember one unassailable statistic, as explained by the late, great George Carlin: "Just think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize half of them are even stupider!"
So it seems the consensus is to plant horizontal. Does it make a difference if it is planted in a pot, raised garden or in the ground?
Horizontal is better than vertical but I still think locating the buds and orienting it to give you the best chance of those buds reaching the surface ASAP is the best method.
There are threads all over here and the rest of the web about growing hops in pots, raised beds, or just mounds in the ground, so no reason to rehash it again here.
Do not plant rhizomes horizontally. Plant them vertically, with the "eyes" or shoots pointed skyward.
Also, planting them in the ground will be the most successful long-term. Hops can put out a massive root system, so constraining that in a pot will hamper growth.
