Is it ok to cover hop plants with spent grain for winter?

Hey guys, so now that it is getting to be that time where we prune our hop plants and cover them for the winter, I've been thinking. I have a huge pile of spent grain in my back yard and no mulch. Would it be ok to shovel some of the spent grains on top of the plants to cover them for the winter?
