Default Humulus yunnanensis

Has anyone even heard of this species? Or more importantly, has anyone ever cultivated or used them in brewing?

I ask because I'm currently living in Yunnan and one of the very few people brewing beer besides "Farmer Zhou's Lucky 3.3% Corn Beer". Information here is not easy to come by--internet and the infrequent meeting/sighting of a 'brewer' (we're a rare species ourselves!).

So, any info/contacts you could give would be appreciated tremendously!

No personal experience but understand that it is not a "hop" specifically.

Hops used for brewing are Humulus lupulus, which can be broken into various subspecies like lupulus (what we mostly use for brewing), neomexicanus (sometimes used for brewing or in breeding), pubescens (don't know if this is used), etc.

Then there are close "cousins" like Humulus japonicus (used as onramental but considered an invasive species by most US states) and Humulus yunnanensis. I haven't found much on your species but I would say brew with it and see what happens. It can't be any worse than Lucky Corn Beer.

You're in a position to pioneer an underused species of hop! That's probably both a good and bad thing.

I wouldn't give up though. In a few years, some researcher will probably isolate a compound in them that cures the common cold or something. Plants are like gold mines if you look hard enough.

Dan,

it's not likely to be used in the commercial hop breeding industry because there is a mismatch with the sex chromosomes between the two species. While it would be interesting to see how viable a potential cross may be, the likelihood as I previously stated would be low.
