Default APA brewday

brewed up my first APA yesterday, i'm kinda going for a mighty arrow like APA... used cascade, amarillo, and EKG. hit everything almost exactly, got to use my new beastly wort chiller and used the electric heatsticks for strike/sparge water, i'll never use gas again for that. i considered using them for the boil, but i'm just starting to get comfortable with my evaporation rate with the gas, so i stuck to it for this one.

took down the tallest tier on my brewstand to make using the heatsticks easier, plus i almost always measure into a bucket and then pour it into my mash tun anyway (i don't trust my sight glass).

heatsticks in action (heated 11 gallons of water from ~55 to 180 in just under an hour).

gratuitous shot of my first lager (munich helles) doing a diacetyl rest:

1st runnings:

hop additions: 60 (magnum), 10 (cascade, amarillo, EKG), 0 (amarillo, EKG). i'll dry hop with amarillo/EKG also.

new wort chiller:

pitched the yeast around 3:30 yesterday and this morning already had a nice krausen and healthy fermentation rockin... looking forward to this one!

Ya gotta just LOVE APA. I'm drinking a few of then right now. I make mine about 4% ABV so I can drink more.

hmm... I didn't see where you put in the motor oil. It was right there next to the hop additions. Does it go in at flameout?

yeah, it blows my old chiller out of the water... i got a great price on 50' of that copper tubing and once i get a pump, i have a whirlpool recirculator tube that i'll connect to it.
