You can download QBrew here:

http://www.usermode.org/code.html

It's a free open source program that will get you through most of the basics, but it lacks many of the features that BrewSmith, ProMash and other have.

beersmith offers a pretty decent trial period if you think you'd eventually pony up and buy some software, its pretty cheap and makes your life a whole lot easier. someone also once directed me here

http://www.tastybrew.com/calculators/

this site has some pretty good homebrew calculators that you'll probably have need for at some point.

They're all related to AG, so if you're looking to to extract or PM you won't need to worry about any of those features just yet.

www.beertools.com has a free web based program that all you have to do is register to use. It has some limited functionality if you do not purchase the actual program, but it will let you build recipes, whether they are extract, PM or AG.

The recipe generator and calculator are pretty good.
