Default All-Grain - CBC 2nd place winner Big Motor Stout

Recipe Type: All Grain
Yeast: WLP001
Yeast Starter: always
Batch Size (Gallons): 12
Original Gravity: 1.066
Final Gravity: 1.018
IBU: 46.75
Boiling Time (Minutes): 60
Color: Black
Primary Fermentation (# of Days & Temp): 7 @ 68*
Additional Fermentation: keg and let rest @ 36*
Secondary Fermentation (# of Days & Temp): 12 @ 68*
Tasting Notes: I haven't got the notes from the judges yet. I will post when I do.

We just learned that we won second place at the Chico competition with our Big Motor Stout so I thought I would share.


12# Pale Ale malt
8# Munich malt
1# Light chocolate
1# Chocolate
1# Rye
1# Carafoam
1#10oz Carapills
1# Honey malt
1# Black roasted barley


3oz N.Brewer whole 8.5% for 60 min
1 oz N.Brewer whole 8.5% for 10 min
1 oz Cascade whole 7.4% 10 min
Mash in 9 gal of H2O and rest @ 156-157 for 90min

So I finally got my results back. I scored a 42 out of 50. Not bad, but not the best I can do. I got feedback like:
Great full body beer.
I really like this stout.
Beautiful creamy head
One of the best I have tasted.
Nice balance.
Oh I liked this one... @ 59 deg this was an EXCELLENT beer, I would LOVE to try it at 90* if you know what I mean.
They said I needed a little more hop bitterness.... I can do that!


This beer won 3rd place last year, 2nd this year,,,,, I have my sights on next year!
