Stir bar to whirlpool 10 gallons in keggle.

Can one use a "plate stirrer" and a stir bar in a keggle with 10 gallons of beer to create a small current (weak whirlpool) to improve IC performance?
I have seen this talked about a little, but I have not seen anyone that has successfully done this.

The SS keggle does not interfere. I used my friend's good (can't remember the brand) plate stirrer and a small stir bar on an empty keggle and the thing spun fine.

I will be using a DIY stirrer. I can always change my stirrer specs for bigger stir bars.

The question: What size bar should I use for 10 gallons of wort in a keggle? I don't want a vortex, just a small current to aid cooling and trub cone formation.

I have a stir bar in my 5 gallon kettle and it does a fine job. From my trial and error I would suggest using a little 120V desk fan with a dimmer switch/knob worked in. My unit uses a 12V fan that has some impressive power for its size, but the resistance you get from that volume of fluid can really bog down/trip up the motor when the PWM gets above 50%. There are some photos of it in action in my build thread: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f170/120...90/index2.html. With my motor, I get better performance with a small stir bar rather than the originally purchased 3" bar, again just too much resistance on that large bar. An egg shaped stir bar also seems to work really well. With your volume you probably need some pretty good torque to keep up.

You would get increased efficiency chilling, but i would assume your wort would be full of hop gunk, since most whirlpools produce a trub cone where your stir bar would be...
