I am looking for feedback relative to experience y'all may have had utilizing different size diameter pipe or tubing to transfer liquor and wort. This would include sparging, cooling, etc. Do specific pumps (ie. March pumps) operate more effectively for HERMS or RIMS rigs utilizing a specific diameter of pipe or tube?
Any thoughts at all would be very much appreciated.
I have a HERMS with a external heat exchanger. I use 1/2 soft copper in that for my coil. I use an iwaki pump that I use for re-circulation and also for transfer and whirlpool chilling. I have had 0 problems with the 1/2 and have a nice heat transfer if I want to step mash.
I use a half-inch coil as well... Probably about 20 ft or so in a pot that I threw a hot water heater element into the bottom of. Works well, but I could probably benefit from an additional heating element.
I am currently contemplating setting up a system that uses either 1/2" OD, 0.37" ID, 16 gauge stainless tubing or 3/4" OD, 0.62" ID, 16 gauge stainless tubing with tri-clover fittings throughout. I dont suppose there is really too much difference between the two but I thought that I would throw it out there in case there were any opinions either way.
