Was offered a free working chest freezer but all I have is the outer dimensions (43x28x33) LxWxH

I think this is about a 9 cu ft does that sound right?

Unless I'm missing something profound in my math, it's definitely off...

43in x28in x33in = 39732 cubic inches / (12*12*12 cu in/cu ft) = 22.99 cubic feet

Probably less... Maybe a 7cu ish (going on off your calcs, but based on wall thickness assumptions).

Lets assume 2" wall thickness......so 39" x 24" x 29".........so 3.25' x 2' x 2.42' = 15.73 cu ft by my meager calculations.

Hi

A lot gets taken out by the compressor hump and you have 3 to 5" in the walls.

43 - (2x3) =37
28 - (2x3) = 22
33 - (2x3) = 27

That's 12.8 before the hump. Figure 1.5 cubic feet for the hump. The freezer is likely 10.x cubic feet.

My 7.2 cu ft freezer has about a 2'x3' footprint, so it's definitely bigger than 7.
