The 2000 watt 120V elements in the blue and yellow blister pack Home Depot carries.

They cost about $9. I have four of them now (two heatsticks and two in the process of being mounted in my HLT).

I just ordered two of these. I've been wanting to upgrade my old RIMS chamber from a 4500W (run at 120V), and finally found a folded 6000W element that wasn't 15" long (these are 12-1/2"). My RIMS chamber has room for a 13" element, so it's a perfect fit and much better than the 1500W 120V ULD element I originally bought. I'm using the other one at 240V in my HLT.

does anyone have problems with their elements rusting?

I noticed the elements in my HLT were forming rust, while the ones in my BK were fine. I assume it has something to do with the acidty of the wort that keeps the BK elements oxidation free... or something like that

Definitely wouldn't expect rust - hell these things are WATER HEATER elements. They shouldn't be rusting...

yes, i went to use my heatsticks last brewday and they had both started to develop rust... needless to say i was pissed, but I heard from someone else that the rust can be cleaned off with bar keeper's friend on the next brewday and the metal will re-passivate... we'll see if it works out for me cause i don't want to have to rebuild the things, that JB weld ain't goin nowhere.

edit: i only use them for my HLT and normally put campden tabs (potassium metabisulfite) in, i don't know if that may be reacting with the elements or what.

I've not had rust on the element itself, but I have had issues with the base of the element rusting, it's just mild steel. A water heater normally has an anode to take the corrosion instead of the element and the rest of the water heater, we don't. I found some high temp food-safe paint to cover the base/threads of the element and I've not had any issues with rust since.

I asked them about this application and got
"POR-15 is completely inert when fully cured. It gives off no chemicals or vapors."
But it's not approved by the FDA.

Use at your own risk of course, but I've not had any issues with it at all and I've done plenty of batches with it in place.
