I recently bought a stopper thermowell from morebeer! and my STC-1000 temperature probe doesn't fit it. Has anyone tried hooking up a Ranco temp probe to The STC-1000? Would The STC-1000 read the Ranco probe?

Hi

The Ranco docs say it uses a PTC (positive temperature coefficient) sensing element. The STC-1000 uses a thermistor (negative temperature coefficient). The STC doc's are a bit unclear so I just measured one - it is a 10K ohm NTC thermistor. Since they work backwards from each other - not going to work in any rational way.

Hmm...this guy (http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/diy-sensor-probes-ranco-controllers-127463/) says he made a Ranco probe with a 30K ohm NTC.

Seems to indicate they are PTC sensors. If the thread is correct and they are 30K NTC's you still have the problem of the STC's being 10K. There's also the minor issue of matching the beta if they are NTC's. I don't have a Ranco probe, so I have no easy way to check it out.
