Default Logo Design Questions

I'd like to design a logo for a brewing-related business. I've used GIMP and a bit of PS before, but I'm wondering if there are any other software products that are better or easier for logo design.

The best thing for creating logos would be something that works in vector formats, like Illustrator. Never used GIMP, but I think it is raster based like Photoshop. You get much better results on type and curves when using vector artwork.

Inkscape is the open source alternative to Illustrator. It has some quirks, but it has worked out well for me thus far

Thanks for the input. This is kind of a one time deal, so I'll check out Inkscape and try my hand.

EDIT: If anyone is interested, here's a nice simple intro to Inkscape.
