I heard in the commentary that Mel Brooks was afraid that one of the crew might leave a foam coffee cup in a scene, so they just wrote it into the script. That way if they got on in frame, it would not be noticed.

Every time I watch Spaceballs I see something I've never noticed before & I always seem to watch it till the end when its on TV.
