I have my own office and I STILL never like to use speakerphone, whereas I have witnessed a coworker make a speakerphone call to get a question answered in the middle of a meeting and motioned for the other meeting attendees to quiet down so he could make his call. Everyone in the room did indeed become quiet, but it was because they were all drop-jaw stunned by the gesture. Maybe he thinks the handset is going to give him brain cancer or something b/c I've never seen him use it.

hey, I DO THAT! you have to! it's ridiculous how long they make you wait sometimes and i don't have time to hold a phone to my ear.

i use an earpiece when i'm calling vendors, but i still use speaker on hold cuz i don't want that crappy elevator music playing in my ear. all "on hold" music should be slayer. always.

but i have my own office and i turn the volume way down while i wait, so this post doesn't really count.

i put the phone on speaker when I'm on hold as well, but i keep the volume down...

it's this immature girl we hired and for some reason she thought it was fun to turn the volume all the way up...

If I worked in your office-- I'd probably turn your volume all the way up once or twice. but then, I'm also the guy who put 300 chinese rice containers in someone's office.

I, too, dislike the scourge of the open office/cubicle world: the speakerphone. Almost as bad is the cell phone, to be honest. I can always tell when someone is using their cell phone instead of the desk phone-- people seem to use a tone of voice and volume with a cell phone that carries throughout the office.
