So, this is essentially a simple expert system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expert_system

The reason it produces seemingly astonishing results is due to its innate ability to quickly narrow down people based on the answers given, even when the individual questions themselves seem highly generic.

Oh sure. It's just pretty impressive to see at work.

I'm still pretty amazed it found Agent Pendergast from the Pendgergast novels. Although it took it about 30 questions to get "The Giver"

It got Commander Adama (BSG) and Commander Shepard (Mass Effect), but not Joe Thornton (guessed Patrick Marleau) or Mark Mothersbaugh (guessed the guy from They Might Be Giants). I gave him a few more hints and he guessed them both the next time.

True. Despite knowing how it works, I'm still pretty amazed that it got Bob Sacamano from Seinfeld in 20 questions.

It guessed Santa Claus when I was thinking of Sam Calagione, but he got it right after the 30th question.

It took a ton of questions, but did finally get Adolphus Busch. It also went over 20 with Jim Koch. Definitely beatable, but very impressive.
