I dunno, I like Phish well enough - even remember seeing them play a dorm party (doing covers) at UVM before they hit it big. But as far as solos go, I found it just ok. Phish isn't a particulary 'technical' band - they don't play anything really difficult - but they have their own groove that makes them 'good', not proficiency with an instrument. Just my opinion, however, and it's worth exactly what you paid for it!

I don't think 'technical' makes a good solo... in fact, I feel it can make for a very bad solo.

Yep - 80's I was at UVM towards the end of that decade
And I completely agree that technical does not equal good (BB King can bend one note and it makes you want to cry!). At the same time, technical does not equal bad, either.
However, for me (just my opinion ) I am impressed when someone is capable of doing both - creating a difficult, yet incredibly moving, piece of work. I tend to be less impressed by just one or the other.
If I had to choose, though, I'd definetly take a heartfelt non-tech over a mechanical mastubatory note-fest any day

LOL, great line. Personally, I feel that every member of phish (except maybe Gordon) is pretty damn technical. To each his own on that. Not too mention, in the 80's they were pretty damn loose and high energy, but they really tightened up in the mid to late 90's.

I am going to have to call BS on this statement. Cactus is one of the better bassists out there right now. If you hace seen or heard any of the final run stuff or any of the post-Phish solo stuff, Mike is ripping it up.

Ripping it, no doubt. I flippin love Cactus... especially the him and leo stuff. But technically, I could play anything Cactus does, and I don't play bass much... although I have played guitar a long time.... I could never play the stuff page plays, and I've played piano a while and I have to try realllllly hard to do some of Trey's riffs, and there's still quite a few I can't play.
I mean, he plays with a pick, that's pretty UNtechnical (that a word?) for a bass player. A technical bass player would be wooten, but I don't think wooten has near as much heart and soul in his playing as Gordon does. That's why I don't think technical is such a great thing.

I dislike jam bands no matter how good they are.
