"Whiteboard" tap handles that don't suck?

About a year ago, I was asked if I could make a whiteboard tap handle. I didn't really want to, because all the ones I had seen looked pretty darned cheesy, but if I was going to do it, it was going to be the best whiteboard tap handle ever. I tried everything I could think of...plastic (hazes, scratches, looks like crap), automotive clear coat (it works, but its kinda toxic).

The only good option we found was porcelain coated steel. Its expensive and you have to buy a bunch of it. About the only way to cut it without chipping is with a waterjet cutter....just not in the budget.

After a year of trying everything, we *finally* found the perfect solution. Antique style glazed tile. Its smooth as silk and easy to write on. It takes dry erase, wet erase and permanent marker. Dry wipes off easily. Wet doesn't come off with casual contact. Permanent comes off easily with a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol or vodka on a paper towel. No hazing! It doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and if you have to cut it, you can cut it cleanly with a tile saw.

We're thinking of making a run of tap handles with whiteboard inserts. We'll have them up on the website next month, but I wanted to throw out a heads up in case anyone wanted to be a "beta tester."

Here's the prototype insert with dry erase marker...

John

Forgot the size. The tile part is 2.2 inches across, flat to flat. The border is .25". Its 3/4" thick. Overall, its 2.7 inches across, which makes it perfect for everyone who mounts their tap faucets 4" apart.

Mad scientists never sleep....

Oh they sleep, but dream always of their next idea.
