How do these compare to 425SS/525SS?

I bought two of these one month apart from each other. I wasn't sure I was going to like them so I only purchased the one. After getting it installed I liked it enough I decided next time I hit the home brew supply I would pick up another one. They sure have a nice smooth pull. Stay very clean. I liked them a lot. UNTIL...

After about 2 months on the first tap it started not sealing. I went through all the trouble shooting. Took it apart, cleaned it, spit shined it, lather, rinse, repeat. Then I gave it to my brew buddy. He did the same thing. Damn thing still leaks. Sometimes it just continues to drip after the pour and then it will get worse and turn in to a small trickle. Other times it will shut off completely. Then you step back wait about a minute or so and it will open back up and start pouring beer all over the floor. Also repeatable is the taping of a keg. As soon as the pressure hits the line the tap pops open, fills my drip tray and does a floor pour before I can get out of the kegerator and over to the tap. My other Pearl was doing fine. Then about three more weeks went by and it started doing the same damn thing.

So, I have had to go back to my old standard taps, what a drag. I have not seen many other complaints about these Pearls. Are people just not using them or did I some how get two from the same bad lot?

Interesting. I have the regular old cheapie faucets on my kegerator because when I first bought my kegging equipment a couple years back that's what the guy at the LHBS suggested.

I later discovered the mythical "forward sealing perlick" and asked why he didn't carry those and he proceeded to describe precisely the sort of problems you're having. Namely that the faucet didn't always close all the way and would sometimes leak especially if special care wasn't taken to ensure it was fully and forcefully closed.

While everybody gripes about sticky faucets I find that to be a none issue but I pull a pint almost everyday. If I had a keezer with 4 or 5 taps though I can see how some faucets might go several days between uses. I've considered going to a perlick for the bling factor but, well, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I'd suggest you contact the manufacturer, if they stand behind their product they should get you some replacement parts or a new faucet.

The 525s are known to "fall open" easier than the 425s. Use light handles on them.

I just installed 4 of the 525ss and surprisingly with just a tap of the handle and it starts to run (drip). Anybody making a hold back to keep from accidentally hitting one and starting the flow? I assume there is no function that if you push the handle hard to the off position, it locks…

thanks

tom
