At my LHBS, Fermentis yeasts are mostly $5/pack. Wyeast is $7/pouch. I just get the best yeast for the job. And then I wash it for 5 or 6 generations (about as long as I can stretch most strains before mutation catches up with me). The $2 just isn't a big deal stretched over 10 or so batches and even dry yeast can be washed. It'll be interesting to see what happens if Fermentis catches up with Wyeast on price. I'd personally use US-05 and W-34/70 as long as it's even close to Wyeast prices, but I think there would be many who would use liquid exclusively in that case. The dry-yeast-is-inferior mantra is still strong with the homebrewers I talk to.

With the last increase in Fermentis yeasts, I have been trying to stager brews that I can just pitch on the cake of the dry yeast. It's always been said it's not worth washing dry yeast, so why not try to get at least 2 batches out of a $3.50 pack. I brew a lot of Pale Ales and IPAs though too so that helps. I also have about 8 strains in the fridge for when I feel like using something other than Am. ale yeast.

That's how the LHBS is around here too, same as what you mentioned, a smack pack is 9.50 and a VSS is 11.50, quarts of star san are 35. needless to say I only visit in an emergency anymore. It does suck because I love to support a local store, but man, she makes it tough on herself when i can order online and have it delivered for way less without leaving my house.

9.50 for a standard smack pack and 11.50 for a VSS here.

Maybe I have been wise before my time, I routinely repitch 04 and 05, even when I have a stock of new packets in the fridge.

I don't get it. Red Star can make wine yeast that wholesales for $0.25 a 5 gram pack and retails for $0.49 (standard 100% homebrew shop markup) and hasn't raised their price in years! Fermentis WB 34/70 started out expensive from the get go with the wholesale price of $3.45 and I see the my wholesaler still has US-05 at $1.90 which it has been at for a while. I'll try to stock up before the price goes up at the wholesaler and may have to start steering more price conscious customers to Coopers or Muntons yeasts ($0.64 and $0.50 wholesale respectively)

Just checked another wholesaler and their WB 34/70 is $5.00 and US-05 is $2.50 and that is probably still before whatever increase is coming.

I wonder if Wyeast has ever considered getting into the dry yeast business? Even with just a handful of common strains. Seems like there is room for new entries to the market if fermentis can raise prices like that.

*Disclosure, I work part time at my LHBS
