In principle, small local shops should be trying to establish long-term relationships, and offering advice for free. Theoretically, if they are good and helpful enough, when the student is working and can afford to upgrade, they will go back to the local shop.
And especially in NYC!, store staff is likely to lie and cheat customers, and deal in stolen merchandise.
A professor is supposed to put his students' learning and education first- above all. That's supposed to be why they teach rather than competing in the market themselves.
Despicable? C'mon, Kilgore. Store owners and salespeople don't need protection from big bad ol' college students.
Nice theory but it doesn't work in practice. They have been trained to use one store and buy from another. They won't stop later. They will never go to the small stores to buy, just for for advice.

But we are traveling tooooo far off topic. Lets move the morality to another thread.

those same people are smart enough to realize it's quicker and easier to get more information from the web than their local store so I still don't think that's an issue. I'm not sure where that so called training comes in to play.

p.s. back to the OP -- I take into account delivered price, so whenever I order on-line I use Austin Homebrew...

Im all into supporting local stores...just so happens Austin Homebrew Supply's storefront is 10-15 minutes from my doorstep. I will not buy buy ingredients from anyone else (price be damned) simply for the service and great advice I get every time Im in the store, which seems to be about twice a month at least.

have to talk to frank..............................
How is ole "Friendly" Frank? He was mellowing when I left Omaha.

On the topic, I generally buy in bulk a few times a year and do the "Walmart" thing making a cart at AHS, NB, & B3.. With gas prices under $2 I'll probably drive up to MDHB for bulk grains and I buy most of my hops in bulk from Freshops.

When it is time to do a big buy, I generally buy from where I can get everything I need in one place. More often than not, AHS has everything I am looking for at the time in stock. (Except that really cool stainless wand with the stone for oxygenating I got at Williams)
