Default 6 month old Wyeast

Hey Everyone,
When we ordered our initial Wyeast order we may have went a little overboard. We have some stock of Wyeast that was made in April 2011 that I dont want to sell as fresh yeast anymore so we are going to offer them at $3.00 a pack instead of throwing them out. Those of you that make starters know that they are just fine for up to a year as long as you are making a good starter. Below is a link to what we have now. Check back often to see if we have anymore on sale. We will rotate them out as we need to. Once they are gone they are gone! Sorry the HBT discount will not apply to these yeasts.

I've had pretty good luck with old packs of Wyeast, so my library is in for a big expansion. Score!

Thanks!

Okay so this was a little bit more popular than I thought it would be. I'll do my best to get as many as I can out today but I'm going to Say that some of them probably will not go out until tomorrow. As always all email tracking numbers when they do ship.

Talk about a tease...Got to the site, loaded up my cart only to find 3/4 of my order was out of stock (site said In stock ).

I go back to double check, I guess it doesn't auto update the stock cause it still says there is stock on some of them. Bummer. I'll get it next time Apex! Next time!

If you make a starter, then the age of a yeast isn't really an issue. When you make a starter, and grow it, you're replicating more yeast to make up for any loss. You're making new, fresh yeast.

Bobby M did a test on year old stored yeast here; http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f13/testing-limits-yeast-viability-126707/

And my LHBS cells outdated tubes and packs of yeast dirt cheap 2-3 dollars each and I usually grab a couple tubes of belgian or other interesting yeast when I am there and shove it in my fridge. and I have never had a problem with one of those tubes.

I usually make a starter but I once pitched a year old tube of Belgian High Gravity yeast directly into a 2.5 gallon batch of a Belgian Dark Strong, and after about 4 days it took off beautifully.
The purpose of a starter is to reproduce any viable cells in a batch of yeast....that;s how we can grow a starter form the dregs in a bottle of beer incrementally...and that beer may be months old.

Even if you have a few still living cells, you can grow them....That's how we can harvest a huge starter (incrementally) from the dregs in a bottle of some commercial beers. You take those few living cells and grow them into more.

It does auto update but if someone else has those items in their shopping cart it will not show them as out of stock but it also wont let the next guy order them either until they either order or exit their cart. Keeps us from overselling in stock. You gotta love technology. Check back in a bit.
