Default 6 Gallon Beer Kits?

What do you think of 6 gallon beer kits as well as 5 gallon?

I can offer 6 gallon kits for about the same price as 5 gallon kits.

12 extra beers. 1 keg and a 12 pack of 12 oz bottles. 64/12oz or 35/22oz.

Pro:
More beer for the money
Making 5 gallons might as well make 6 gallons
Use 6 or 6 1/2 gallon carboy for secondary
Only 40 to 50 cents per 12 oz beer

Cons:
Most people won't have a big enough primary
Some people won't have a big enough secondary

What do you think?

Forrest

Sound's great, but I think you hit it with your pros and cons. You might make a few sales, but in the long run I don't think it will be worth your time to make up special kits for an extra gallon.

I agree with McKBrew you will make a few sales but I dont think youll get enough to make it too worth while. If made as a limited time sale it may spur a few more sales off of it. Now a small reduction of price equivalent to one gallons worth of materials on a second kit purchased I think would go over pretty well. Only my two cents

I would think anyone who has a big enough setup for 6 gallons is probably doing 10 gallon batches. IMO - 5 1/2 gallons into the primary so that after all the transfer losses we get a full 5 gal into the keg is probably the sweet spot.

I'd buy it.

I always do 6 gallon batches (end boil volume) so that in the end I have at least 5 gallons in the keg. The fact that all the big online LHBS do 5 gallon batches stops me from buying kits sometimes.

Could this just be a drop down option on your kit pages? I think that would be excellent.

I agree with Beerific about that.

Something people also might like to do with these would be to just do their normal 5g batches with the 6g kit for the added ABV boost.

I think Forrest is referring to 6 gal of finished volume, so 6 1/4 to 6 1/2 in the fermenter. His current kits are for 5 1/4 gal to account for some losses.

Hmm..I did not realize that, it has been a while since I used a AHS kit.

I have always seen batch size as the post boil and/or post dilution volume.

I always love a good deal and personally i would love the extra added value of basically a free extra gallon worth of ingredients. If the 6 gallon batches cost the same as the 5 and were of the same quality i would definitely be more likely to buy from you guys.

I think my bucket could handle it, at least with a blow off tube.
