Mine leaked when I first put water in it. Made a call and found out this is common if the barrel has been empty for more than a week. I have a large enough sink I was able to fill the barrel with water and then the sink. Let it soak for two days. It turned the water in the sink a nice shade of brown and smelled so good (almost took a drink). Both of the end bands came off when I unwrapped it but tightened up after the soaking. It sat all day yesterday and I checked it this morning and no leaks.

My barrel is set to arrive next week. Since I will not be able to put beer in it for a few weeks, is it wise to just go ahead and fill it with water until then? If yes, dose it make sense to fill it with 180 degree water, then bung it? That way it will get sanitized (kinda) with the hot water.

Just did a nice interview with a local brewery that has a barrel program and I asked that very question. Answer from this brewer was to leave the barrel empty and hit it with a CO2 blanket for storage. He was not a fan of leaving water sitting. Too many unknowns with whats in the wood to leave them swimming for too long. Swell with water if needed when you are ready to fill with beer.
Makes sense.

It's a good idea to soak your barrels with water over night so they can tighten up. Then condition with the spirit of choice before use. I want one of these for myself!

In case life gets in the way, I just wanted to clarify about the advice for storage... just a healthy dose of CO2? I've read before about people storing it with 750ml of their spirit of choice inside, and just rotating it regularly. Is this a bad idea, and should I just stick with the CO2? Thanks for the help!
