I brought this up a few weeks ago. The pack was cartoonishly large, but it didn't break. I've yet to hear of any popping from overinflation.

You could have a small starter at full krausen by pitching time, though, if you're into that.

Default I guess i was thinking more in terms

of whether the yeast has a "peak" activation period, and then tapers off, or if it was okay to wait. It's too late anyway, I went to bed and am now getting ready to brew. The pack is still huge.

I was worried it would "deflate".

It won't deflate and it is fine to wait. I usually smack the morning before I make the starter and let it swell all day (12-14 hours) while I am at work.
