Default Why is abv so low??????

As you can see from the pic i have the 2 readings.
First was 1.40 ....I believe that means 1.04
and then the second was 1.09 and that means 1.009
Og - FG = total x 129
So What i do is 1.4 - 1.009 x 129 = 3.999
Why is my ABV SO LOW?????

--I USED 7PDS of DME-- and about 24 days in primary

What kind of DME? And what kind of yeast?

1.04 seems low for 7lbs of DME. Should be closer to 1.06 I would think.

Also, I have always seen (OG-FG)x 131=ABV

1.009 is a pretty normal FG

7 pounds of DME in 5 gallons is 1.063 OG. You probably didn't mix in your top off water well enough prior to taking a reading.

With a starting gravity of 1.040, 4% ABV is about right. But, I agree that #7 of DME should have given you a higher SG. Did you do a partial boil? Might just be a mixing problem.

Yeah, in fact it got all mixed well during fermentation. No worries. You're closer to 6% than 4.
