Default What happens if I increase the amount of malt?

Hello all,

I'm a new brewer with 2 batches under my belt (both of them were American IPAs) and I am going to brew this recipe this weekend:

Both the other IPAs I've brewed called for at least 1 lb of malt grains to be steeped and then using about 7 lbs of DME or LME.

My question is, with the recipe that I have linked above, what would happen if I increase the amount of crystal malt from 1/2 lb to 1 lb? What effects would that have on flavor, bitterness, and/or alcohol content?

Any advice is welcome

Steeping doesn't actually do a whole lot. You might get a slight increase in color and possibly aroma.

it'd add more caramel flavor, darken the color and add little to the OG (like 1-2 pts), which i guess indirectly would reduce bitterness. so for the most part, things you wouldnt want to do in an IPA

I was talking about steeping in general, not just in regards to crystal malts.

It would slightly increase the OG and FG (unfermentables), slightly increase "maltiness"/slightly decrease percieved bitterness perhaps (due to unfermentables from crystal)....no effect on abv.....as I understand it, anyways

Crystal malts also add a bit of malty sweetness,so I don't usually use more than 1/2lb in my recipes. But it also depends on what other malts are being added that can add roastiness,&/or other flavor qualities that could use some sweetening. Depending on the style you're shooting for.
