Default What is American crystal malt

I have a recipe for a rudder common beer that calls for .5 lb of american crystal malt. I can't find this online. Anyone?

I may be wrong but if I remember my beer books correctly Crystal 40L is the "standard" when a recipe doesn't specify and I don't think "American" in the front makes any difference.

I've always assumed Crystal=Caramel malt, since my last few brews that included Crystal on the recipe, my LHBS guy went straight for the Caramel malt.

Plus both BrewPal & Beer Alchemy list Crystal and not Caramel...

Correct me if I'm wrong, oh HBT sages!
