Default using coriander

Im still pretty new to this and im experimenting. Can anyone tell me what kind of qualities coriander seeds will contribute and also which styles of beer they work with? Any info on the topic would help. Ive seen several recipes calling for it but havnt read anything yet that explains the purpose of it.

They add a spiced feel to the beer. These are often balanced out with orange, and complement it quite well.

For a comparison, grab a Hoegarden and a Blue Moon. They are both Belgian Wits, but the blue moon has coriander.

Its good for a witbier

it makes a spicy aroma that compliments the tart flavor of the wheat really well

if you can find fresh blue moon on tap, you can probably get a good represnetation of the taste of what the coriander is like - not so much out of the bottle though

go try some beers that have corriander and see for yourself

I think Hoegaarden has coriander in it too.

Helpful. Thanks.

So the coriander is added to the boil, correct? Is it ground?

Yes, Hoegaarden does have coriander in it. I've made a few wits because of my love for Hoegaarden. I've never had the opportunity to try Blue Moon, living in Canada but my next trip to the States...I'll go on a hunt!

Usually spices for a wit are some quantities of coriander (which is actually the seed of cilantro. I hate cilantro, love coriander), cardamom, and (bitter) orange peel.

mmmmm....wit.....

Certain types of coriander are not desirable...
Also most brewers have misconceptions about what wit spices do to the flavor of beer.
