Stir Finishing Hops?

My first post but have been reading here for awhile. I really appreciate all the great beer making tips I have found here. I just completed my first batch a few weeks ago (Brewhouse Honey Blonde Ale kit), cracked the first bottle the other night and am impressed. I'm looking forward to this being a great long-term hobby. I also make wine from kits.
My second kit involved "steeping" (probably not the right word) milled grains, straining, adding liquid malt extract and hops, and boiling. There was a second bag of hops added near the end of the boil, then the wort was strained into cold water in the primary, yeast added, etc etc etc. It went into the secondary after four or five days. It's a Honey Brown Ale, 1.042 OG and the gravity seems to have settled at 1.015 in the secondary.
Anyway, now to the question: there was a bag of pelleted "finishing hops" included, which it said to add directly to the secondary a week before bottling. I added them loose the other night (should I have used a hop sock?), and by last night of course the hops were floating on top of the beer. Is there anything to be lost (or gained) by stirring gently? I know when I have loose grape skins in my wine I can prevent mould from forming by stirring.
Looking forward to hearing the thoughts of you experienced brewers. By the way, I have a Festa Brew Bock on the go, and will be starting a Festa Brew Double Oatmeal Stout on order. Also am looking at the Brewhouse Munich Dark Lager. Would like to try going with some liquid yeasts for my upcoming kits.
