Default Specific Gravity - A little confused

I started with 1.050 and I get 1.020 at the end. So I think my beer is 3 %? But I look in the home brew magazines and there numbers dont work so simple. What am I missing? Temperature?

OG - FG * 131 gets you close enough.

You're a lot closer to 4%

no. Not right.

.03 x 131

OG - FG x 131 = abv%
