Default Sanitizing Citrus Zest for 2ndary

Searched around a while and heard mention of 3 methods for getting zest ready to add to secondary, but none of them seem to be specific. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

1 - soak it in a bit of vodka. but for how long, in how much vodka, and do you add the vodka to the 2ndary with the zest?

2 - zap it for 15 - 30 seconds in the microwave. this seems like it might 'cook' it, and lead to a different flavor than desired.

3 - boil it in a small amount of water. this poses the same questions as with soaking it in vodka.

Thanks for taking the time to respond! And now for a dancing banana..

Are you making your own zest?

I honestly wouldn't do anything if it was pre-packaged. If I was making my own I'd sanitize the orange and myself before making it.

Don't cook it....

I'd just sanitize the outside with a safe cleaner (diluted star san or something) and then shave away.
