Hi all ! I have some good 5 gal recipes I want to convert to 7 gal batches. I tried the Beer Recipator software but I can't make heads or tails out of it. Is there something simpler out there where if I input ingrediance for a 5gal batch I can then change it to a 7 gal?

I don't think that accounts for boil volume with hops utilization. If you can't find a better way, you can sign up for BeerCalculus over at Hopville.com. That would let you input some volume numbers, and then you would have to tweak all your hop additions and grainbill to get everything true to the recipe. A little labor intensive, but it can be done. Then again, maybe someone has a much easier way to do it.

You can just scale up- either divide by 5 and multiply by 7, or simply multiply all ingredients by 1.4.

Ok; I'm no mathematician here so when you say divide by 5, multiply by 7 you do mean each ingredient? I like the idea of multiplying ingredient by 1.4 (simpler); but my question is how do you come to this formula? The reason why I ask is what if I want to convert from 5gal to 6 or 10 ?

X / 5 = y

X = you're new volume y = multiplier

Example:

10 / 5 = 2 ----- double everything

7 / 5 = 1.4 -------- all ingredients times 1.4

6 / 5 = 1.2 -------- all ingredients times 1.2

That's pretty basic though, like mentioned before that wont account for different boil volumes or hop utilization.

Yooper just took 1 as a base. Divide it by 5, then multiply it by 7, you come up with 1.4. Then you can use that for each ingredient.

From 5 to 6 gallon? Take 1, divide by 5, then multiply by 6. 1.2 is your factor.
Any sizes up or down will work. To double check yourself, multiply the original number by the factor. It should come up as the size you are going to. if you are going bigger, the factor will be bigger than one. If you are making a smaller batch, the factor will be less than one.

Ok; I got the basics down on up-scaling but now I want to down convert a recipe from 11.25 gal to 7 gal. Can someone help me with this. I'm not big on this math thingy
