Default question on swamp cooler

I know that there is another thread about warmer temps, but i didnt want to hyjack the thread. In the summer time here in Sacramento temps can reach to 110+, and being that i am poor my a/c will basically not run for the season. With that being said is it important to keep the lid on the cooler or does it not matter?

TIA

do you mean that your ale pail is inside a rubber maid cooler, with the top on, to keep temps down?

Swamp Coolers work entirely on the concept of evaporation, so they need to be open. also, AFAIK, most swamp coolers use buckets like these

Here is a cheap and easy evaporative cooler. You could aim a fan at it to increase evaporation.

I also saw someone on the board put their fermenter in a big garbage can, added about a foot of water and then put a box fan on top, but I can't find that thread.
