Pouring from keg early?
|
|
If I pour a sample of beer from my keg each day until it's carbed fully will this hurt anything??

Other than running out of beer just as it starts getting really good? Nothing.

I've done this, and trust me right when it gets good is when you wish you had lots of it left.

lol, yeah it seems harder to wait when it's on tap. so easy to pull the handle...
i took bobby_m's advice, and left the serving line off. it's definitely saved me from drinking green beer.
4oz every day for 2 weeks is 56 ounces / 4.5 pints / ~0.5 gallon. you're gonna wish you had those 4.5 pints back when it becomes really good and it kicks....

I just did this about 30 minutes ago. Undercarbed, but I just couldn't wait.

everyone is tempted. I usually chill and drink the leftover ~half beer from bottling to get a feel for what I've produced, but flat beer is so unsavory to my taste that that little bit makes me wait at least another week.
Cut your daily samples down to weekly samples and by your 3rd one you'll be sitting on a nearly-full batch of good beer.

Do it! It will help you know when a beer is properly carbed. And you will get to taste the stages your beer goes through as it ages.
I do agree the last few pints are the best, that's why you brew many batches ahead.

There are quite a few styles where the level of carbonation makes all the difference in the flavor of the beer. The best way to learn that is by tasting it every day out of the keg. Personally, unless I cold crash, after I rack to keg, I wait a day to hook it up to gas. It won't carbonate very well warm anyway, so it really won't do anything the first day. When making a new style, I have been taking small (about 2oz) samples every day after that just to test the carb level. Yes, you will have drank about 10-12oz of your beer, but you will learn the value of carbonation.
Just my opinion.
