Absolutely! You get much more consistent carbonation and it's a heck of a lot easier and faster.

I think the problem with using, for example, old soda bottles, is that 1) it is hard to get that soda taste out and 2) it can be hard to get the cap to seal after the first use.

How long to you plain on leaving them in plastic bottles. If you plain on leaving them in for short term oxidation shouldn't be a big danger. Its going to be hard to get the soda taste out of them. Plus i dont think you can get a true seal with the caps

i've had no problems with soda taste, and I've been using root beer bottles, arguably the worst to get rid of. a soak or two with oxiclean and that does the trick for me.
I've had a couple bottled in plastic since january and they seem to be sealed just fine

Go to a baseball game and bring an empty backpack... Save those 16oz plastic bottles that are used for beer... they are much thicker than soda bottles and block the light out...

Nothing. I do that to keep track of carbonation levels. Squeeze them once in a while to see if they are carbed yet.
