Gravity readings and observation tell you almost everything you need to know about your fermentation.
And as for a leaky bucket letting air in it depends on the type of leak whether it'll be a problem.

While I haven't had a chance to take a reading, I did open the cover and take a peak. There's about 2" deep of foam and a nice Krausen ring, so I'll check gravity once the kids are in bed but I guess all is well in homebrewland.

Since you have evidence that everything is going well I suggest it is time to leave it alone. If you are worried about the seal on the lid wrap the joint with Saran Wrap.
Wait about 3 weeks then check for Final Gravity then bottle the beer. The more you mess with it now the more likely you are to introduce infection or oxidize the beer.

I wasn't planning on touching it anymore, other than a reading which ill take via the faucet, so I wont have to lift the cover again. Or should I bother?

I wouldn't even bother at this point. The krausen is enough to tell you that fermentation is going on. IMO, to take a gravity reading is just wasting beer at this point. You wouldn't have karausen if it wasn't fermenting. Give it a couple of weeks and then take the readings to make sure it's done.

OK, sounds like a plan. I wasn't certain that a Krausen ring ONLY appears due to fermentation
