Default Mold in the Extract!! What to do??

Crap!! Got my starter done yesterday, its bubbling next to me as i type. good brew so. Open the extract and i see this -

Those are little mold spores i think as there is some white hairy fuzzy stuff on it too. There doesnt appear to be much in the extract itself mostly on the sides and the top.

What would you do? Continue the brew and hope for the best? Or cut my loses and dump it and try to get a replacement ?

You sure it's not crystalization?

It will all be boiled anyway. Its not optimal freshness but when it happens to me I just scoop off the mold and trash it and use the rest.

Yeah I say screw it and use it. Boiling for an hour should be more than enough

Yeah i am sure. It looks like spores and has hairy white fuzzy stuff on them.

Now that i think about it one of the containers wasn't sealed properly as when i opened the shipping box there was a little bit of extract on the packing peanuts and a little on the grain bag. I didn't think much of it at the time but now i think about it this must be the container that wasn't sealed properly.

Going to extend the boil and boil the shyt out of it and see what happens.

I can't tell squat from the pictures to tell if it's mold or not. Then again I've never used canned extract. Maybe this appearance is common to people who have & it's crystallization or something as Gila mentioned.

IF it is fungus, I myself wouldn't use it. I know that the spores of some fungi are capable of surviving temperatures past boiling (though I'm not sure if this holds true for any fungi that can grow on wort).

How old is the extract? As in, did you just buy it? Or has it been sitting around for 6mo??? Fresh extract is key to good taste, or so I hear.

I wouldn't worry too much about contaminating because of the 1hr boil. As for the flavor? *pray*

You are going to assassinate everything in the extract anyway. Screw it and brew it!
