Mash Efficiency

Just a quick question:

When calculating Mash effciency, is John Palmer using UK or US gallons?
How to Brew - By John Palmer - Mash Efficiency

I know it doesn't really mater, but I'd like to have an idea of OG when I get around to making an AG brew.
