I have used Midwest kits and been very happy with them.

I'm new and don't have any experience to offer, but for clarification, do you mean equipment kit or ingredient kit?

Start with your phone book, do you have any homebrew stores nearby? Visit them if you do. If not, then do a web search for something near you. There are a ton of them out there, and we all have our favorites, some of which offer free shipping (to the contiguous 48 states, BAH!). I think austinhomebrew.com is one of them. The advice here is free, and plentiful.
