All of my friends home brews I've ever tried never have had any smoke. On my latest brew (Midwest Autumn Amber ale) I get that traditional carbonated "pop", and a really good amount of smoke, and really nice lacing.

I had a nice pop and smoke on my second batch a few weeks back. It was an Amber.

I don't think that's a good thing necessarily, but to each his own. Personally I like a bit lower carbonation so I can actually taste the beer and not the CO2.

Is this not usual? I can't remember the last time I've had a properly carbed homebrew that didn't have the CO2 "smoke" when I popped the cap.
